Reach for the SKIES: New industry careers DVD

Wood and paper industry organisations will benefit from an exciting new promotional DVD designed to encourage school leavers to consider a career in the industry. The DVD resource, called Reach for the SKIES, is a national initiative produced by A3P in partnership with the National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI) with funding from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Companies and organisations from across the industry provided input to the DVD content through their participation at workshops hosted by NAFI and A3P in 2007. The DVD was produced as part of the National Communication Strategy for the Wood and Paper Industry (see below).

Content

The DVD offers a 5 minute preview version and a 15 minute feature using modern filming techniques and fantastic case studies on the many long-term and meaningful career opportunities. The DVD is accompanied by information for potential forest, timber and paper industry employees. The information will direct them to contacts in their local area for a starting point towards a career in the industry.

Distribution

Every secondary school, Local Community Partnership Provider and Regional Industry Skills Advisor in Australia received copy of the DVD in March 2008. Copies were also sent to companies, industry associations and skills organisations. Complementary copies of the DVD are available by contacting A3P on 02 6273 8111.

A3P's role in addressing the skills shortage

A3P is committed to working with our members, stakeholders and governments to develop practical solutions to the industry skills shortage.

Industry skills shortage audit (2006)

A3P secured $165,000 in funding from the Australian Government to undertake a skills audit of our industry jointly with NAFI. The report, published in August 2006, identified key drivers of skills shortages and made recommendations to industry, Governments and education providers on how to best combat the growing skills shortages faced by the industry. The final report presents an exciting opportunity for the wood and paper products industry to begin to address the range of skill shortages that currently exist.

National Communication Strategy for the Wood and Paper Industry (2007-08)

Following the industry skills audit, A3P and NAFI received further Australian Government funding of $365,000 for a “National Communication Strategy for the Wood and Paper Industry”. The two components of the project were:

1. Providing businesses in the wood and paper products industry with information about the National Training System and ways in which they can address their labour and skills need using the system.
2. Producing a DVD to promote employment/career opportunities in the wood products and paper industry to school leavers particularly in rural and regional areas.

Both components of the project have now been completed and will be distributed widely to industry, schools, and training providers in March 2008.
